HOMEWORK Unit 14 " SMARTLIFE"

SESSION 1

Read the following text about the media generation and write the main ideas from it.

Welcome to "The Media Generation"

Teens are spending so much time watching TV and playing with their computer and video games that the Kaiser Family Foundation has dubbed this generation "The Media Generation."
The recent study found that children aged 8-18 were watching TV, playing video games, on their computers, and listening to music for a total of 6 hours and 23 minutes EVERY DAY! Many kids were doing two or more activities at once. Most of this time is still spent watching TV. Kids spent almost four hours every day watching TV. With so much time in front of TV and other media, perhaps Kaiser should have labeled it "The Media-Addicted Generation."
What excess TV, video game, and computer use may be doing to you
How much time you spend in front of a TV, video, and computer screen is important, because these activities have been linked to obesity, attention problems (like ADHD), and poor grades. Violent content may condition you to accept violence in your life. The sexual content of many popular shows and games may encourage you to experiment before you are ready. The TV can act as a depressant, stifle your creativity, encourage conformity, and simply waste your valuable time.

a. Take your rubbish home            d. Save energy
b. Save the forests                         e. The problem of plastics
c. Save water

                 HOW TO SAVE THE EARTH

I. Most of the Earth’s water is salt water. Only three per cent is fresh water. This must be saved! To save water, you can have showers instead of baths. You can wash dishes in a bowl rather than under a running tap. Are you aware that every time a tap is left running while you brush your teeth, about 60 litres of water is wasted?
II. A lot of pollution is caused by the electricity we use. To save electricity, don’t keep your TV on if you aren’t watching it. Make sure that you turn off lights when you go out of a room.
III. Don’t use lots of plastic bags. They don’t decompose, so most of them will be unchanged 100 years from now! When you go shopping, try to take a paper bag with you. When you pack your sandwiches, put them in reusable containers.
IV. Rubbish can make our country dirty and unpleasant. Wild animals and birds are often harmed and killed by rubbish. Last year, many animals were killed when they ate pieces of metal from cans. Others were hurt by broken bottles. Keep the country clean. Put your rubbish in a bin or take it home.
V. Thousands of trees were cut down in tropical forests last year. When you buy anything made of wood make sure it isn’t hardwood, such as mahogany or teak. Buy softwood, such as pine and ash. Softwood trees grow quickly. Another way to save the forests is to recycle paper. One ton of recycled paper will save 17 trees! When you go on a picnic, be careful to put out cooking fires and cigarettes. Many forests are destroyed by fires every year.

True or false?
1. Water can be saved by having showers.

g)    (What language/ speak/ in Ethiopia?) ________________________________________________________

h)   (What /this machine/ use/for?) ________________________________________________________

SESSION 3

▪ Read the following text and highlight the connectors that you find:

I really hate thinking that human beings are still killing animals which are about to disappear. For instance, yesterday I listened to the radio and I heard that Japan has announced its intention to resume whale’s hunting. On the one hand, I know that whales’ hunting is an old tradition in these countries.
On the other hand, I think they should be aware of the fact that, if they keep killing whales, they will extinguish them. Indeed, whales are classified nowadays as an endangered animal species. In conclusion, I think the whole world should become aware of the problem and try to stop the Japanese plans.
Although they are beautiful to see, they are useless for me. However, I don’t really need whales in my real life. In a sense, it is a pity to loose animals that will never come back to life. Therefore, I won’t really get troubled by the fact that whale’s hunting resumes. In my opinion, it doesn’t matter if all the whales are killed, since my life won’t be really affected by that.

▪ What do you think about whales’ hunting? Give your opinion in a short paragraph (about 5 lines), using some of the logical connectors that appear in the fragment above and that have been seen in the session.
